Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a fatal and infectious nervous system disease that affects deer, moose, elk, and reindeer/caribou. It is classified as a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) or prion disease. CWD exclusively affects members of the cervid or deer family, including wild and captive populations. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) initiated CWD monitoring in the state’s wild white-tailed deer population in 1999, with the first positive cases discovered in 2002.
Hunters in Wisconsin can submit a sample from their deer for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) at our testing station. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) offers free testing for deer harvested in Wisconsin.
